Hood River Oregon is the windsurfing capital of the world and is also famous for its orchards (apple, pear, peaches, cherries, etc.) It has a small airport and Western Antique Aeroplane and Auto museum. The Columbia River Gorge is the only sea-level route through the Cascades and is 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep. The south canyon walls are in Oregon and the north walls are in Washington. You can hike, mountain bike, camp, (most sites have electric hook-ups) fish, (fishing guide service available), kayak, go rafting, rock climb or watch birds and wildflowers.

There are views of Mt. Hood (11,245 feet high) which is 42 highway miles away. The town of Hood River is home to the Columbia Arts Center which includes a gallery. Maryhill Museum of Art is nearby (45 miles east on the Washington side) and houses, among other things, 87 works of sculpture and drawings by Auguste Rodin.  The Gorge is a National Scenic Area. Multnomah Falls, the second highest year-round waterfall in the U.S. is in the Gorge as are many other wonderful but lesser falls.

There are wineries, pubs, fine dining and a good choice of accommodations available, including B&B's, rental homes, and resort properties. For a non-painting spouse, there is a rental home on a golf course.

Below are web sites with more information  on the area.

Please join us on beautiful Whidbey Island for the Plein Air Painters' U.S. Open September 8-12, 2009.

This will be our fourth year hosting this event. Some great new additions to this signature event include one additional day of open painting, a welcome barbeque, and evening activities during the paint out.

The "paint out" portion of the event will commence on September 8th, with a welcome barbeque that evening, and continue through Friday, September 11th.

The 4th Annual Plein Air Painters' U.S. Open will culminate on Saturday, September 12th with a gala at the historic Crockett Farm. There will be both Live and Silent Auctions. This year, each artist is guaranteed at least one painting in the Silent Auction. Saturday afternoon, there will be an Artists' Picnic with a Juror's demonstration.

Make sure to inform your collectors and patrons about the Plein Air Painters' U.S. Open, so they too can "save the date".

You may register online by visiting our website, www.pleinairopen.com, or by calling the Pacific Northwest Art School (known formerly as the Coupeville Arts Center) at (866) 678 3396 or (360) 678 3396.
