Laurie Potter,

Artist Statement:
I have always been fascinated with our natural world and painting is a joyful way for me to express my passion and respect for all living things and the landscapes that surround us.

Involving myself in nature - whether in painting, hiking, volunteering at a wildlife rehab center, or just being observant of my environment - allows me to stretch my perception of its power and awe-inspiring beauty.

Laurie Potter, "A Glimpse"

My creative adventures begin with sketches, field studies, and photography of a scene that inspires me with something such as interesting shapes, lovely color combinations, or a fascinating mood in the weather. I choose a surface that is either rough and textured with brushstrokes of pumice or softer and more accepting of finer detail.

Pastels are a wonderfully vibrant medium that I love for their immediacy as well as for the great variety of strokes that I can achieve depending on what surface and what pastel I work with.

When I am able to work outdoors, I’ll either paint quick acrylic studies or work more extensively on a pastel, and I will take notes on the feelings and perceptions that the view offers me before leaving to finish the piece in the studio. I hope to absorb the landscape and all of the sensations that a day in nature offers so that I can convey the ambiance of the scene to the viewer, and give them a window into not only the landscape itself, but into the ideas and emotions that I experienced while creating the painting.

Laurie Potter, "Bromeliad"

Laurie Potter has produced a body of work that reflects her attention to color, form, and detail. In creating vibrant representational paintings that portray her love of the natural world, Laurie feels that her artwork is an ongoing discovery of how close observation can be blended with imagination and a passion for one’s subject.

After spending several years exploring different materials and methods, she has become adept at painting various subject matter, from birds and animals to landscapes and skyscapes, while consistently focusing on rich color and striking compositions. Laurie’s mixed media paintings of wildlife are often noted for the eyes, where she strives to capture the personality, vitality, and mystery therein.

Her pastel landscapes and botanicals are created in the pursuit of finding the right blend of impression and representation, with strong emphasis on the interplay of color and value. Relying on a combination of field studies and sketches, her own reference photos, and her mind’s eye, Laurie works on her paintings outdoors on location and in her home studio.

Born and raised close to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, much of her youth was spent observing and enjoying the wonders of nature in the woods and by the waterways of the bay area. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Millersville University, PA, she did several months of traveling around the United States, taking the opportunity to sketch at many spectacular sites along the way. When she traveled through the Pacific Northwest she fell in love with the diverse beauty of the region and decided to relocate to the west coast where she now resides in Bellingham, Washington.

Laurie displays her art at galleries throughout Washington State, as well as in solo exhibits and juried group shows. She paints commissions regularly for private collectors, and her artwork was chosen to adorn the label of Barsetti Vineyard’s award-winning wines. She has been chosen to create the art for posters to promote the Allied Arts Downtown Gallery Walk and the Northwest Salmon Enhancement Association, and she’s recently won First Place in the Plein Air Paint Out Show, an Honorable Mention in the 2009 Pastel Journal 100 Competition, and had the distinct honor of winning the Best of Show Award at the Northwest Pastel Society 2009 Members Exhibit.
