I hope everyone enjoys looking at the Lopes Island paintings. As you can see everyone has a different style and sees nature differently.

Why paint out-doors you ask. Ask any of the Lopez Island participants why they like to paint out-doors in a group setting and you will get many different answers. Personally, I like the experience of being with other landscape artists and sharing ideas and information on new pastels, papers and other equipment. It is a good opportunity to watch how other artists solve a particular painting problem and experiment with new painting techniques I may not try in my studio. Evenings allowed us to compare notes on where our favorite place was to paint and have a show and tell of our work in progress. I must admit the more wine I had the better my paintings looked or maybe I became less critical.

I have to admit I am a studio painter and can put out a fairly nice painting from photos but a photo does not show you all the values and colors needed to complete a great landscape painting. And if you are not familiar with the natural landscape it is very hard to add what is needed to make a great painting. That is why painting nature with natural sunlight and noting the subtle color and value changes is helpful.

Lopez was the perfect place to paint. It has wonderful, rolling hills, yellow and gold fields, rocky cliffs and ocean views which gave us a variety of material to paint. Wonderful beach walks, good food and wine and great company. Nothing like hanging out with a bunch of artist.

I hope everyone will give serious consideration to the next NPS paint-out in the fall of 2005.

Thanks again to Jane Wallis and Steve Hill for there hard work to make this trip a success. And thanks to John Knapp for taking the time to keep the Lopis Island information current.

Report by Ann Knapp

I went on the Lopez Island Paint out. Had a great time and have lots of digital pictures for future works when the weather goes south! Bob and I went early (left late in the day July 5th- and happily were not held up by the yahoo who backed his car off the ferry into the water at Anacortes!)

We stayed at Lopez Is Farm Cabins- very quiet, cute, and they had refer and microwave so we could do breakfast in cabin and pack a lunch each day. It poured Tuesday am- but cleared later in the day- I did the piece at Agate bay. The wind was blowing and my eyes were streaming- needed goggles!  Next day threatened rain- but it looked sunnier to the west, so we took a day trip on the ferry to San Juan Island.  Tried to paint at a lavender farm there- only to have the wind come up and lift my easel (shelf, pastels and all) off the ground and dump everything.  A tad discouraging- we did sneak back on Saturday (before the art show) and I got more time to paint. Thursday, everyone showed up from NPS. We painted at the end of Fisherman Bay (a bit of wind- so I did a small study!) first- then went to a second spot near the mouth of the bay and took lots of pictures. Later we went to the south end (near Paul Allens place) and in spite of large mosquitoes, got a good start on my "Queen Madrona"- really a noble tree! Friday am we met at the bakery and then headed for a lovely cove- very Lopez with view of farm and shore. The lighting was flat, but it does capture the essence. I used silver hard pastel to add detail to the pine- it doesn't photo as silver though.

There should be several shots available of us painting along side the road. (We entertained many locals!) We then headed for a Church mid Island. I had stopped to take pictures of a great pastoral view on the way. I really had to pull myself away. I set up to paint, then one of the members managed to put their VW van's right front tire DEEPLY into the ditch- and with all the excitement of extracting the van- I never did get a decent picture. We met for dinner together- food and company were great. Saturday am we met and went to a bay near Spenser Spit Park. I did my view of Seagull Island all in one sitting. It was so fun to do- I used black paper (much shows thru the water) and back painted the hill area with rust. Bob and I left at lunch- caught the ferry early to Friday Harbor- snuck over to the lavender farm for one more go (blessedly, no wind to start- but a thunderstorm cut my session a bit short- had to finish at home. We then showed up at the Gallery opening at Friday Harbor- what a nice show! Due to the odd ferry schedule- we left just as others were arriving, as we had to leave Sunday am EARLY. all in all a good time- still had lots of vistas un-tackled. I'd love to go back again.
