Beginning/Intermediate Level Pastels with
Steven R. Hill

Join international award winning artist, Steve Hill, from Lopez Island, in a 4 day, 2 weekend workshop, January 14 & 15 and January 21 & 22, learning to use pastels on a variety of paper surfaces to achieve immediate and satisfying results.

The first day will be spent learning and practicing various stroke applications, color blending and color layering, with a series of instructor led exercises. Day #2 will culminate in a live demo and your own still-life painting from real objects. These exercises and very basic painting will build the critical foundation so often overlooked, for achieving success with this very versatile medium.

The second weekend you will work either from a still-life or your own reference photos in landscape painting, with instructor demos both days. Steve will provide expert advice and helpful assistance at your easels, throughout the workshop. Handouts will be used, as ways to remember things like composition, value studies, thumbnail sketches, as well as Steve’s own brief history of pastel painting.

Steve is noted for giving high energy, exciting and fun workshops, infusing his own demos with visual techniques and narrated information that will last well beyond the class. A basic pastel starter set is required, which can be purchased for under $150, as well as a stand - alone easel (like a French easel). We will email the recommended basic starter set upon enrollment. It will include a good range of colors in both hard and soft pastel sticks, plus a variety of pastel papers! If you already have some good quality pastel supplies, you may simply add-in what you need to get started.
