Minutes for the 4/15/2017 NPS Meeting

Jan Wall inquired if the board is organized board retreats. James told her that the board had declined to participate in retreats last year and no one has inquired this year.
International show:
Mary Maue, International Exhibit Co-Chair reported that there were 210 entries. Show runs May 6th through June 10. May 6th 2-4PM will be the reception and meet the juror. June 13-17 will be on site pick up of unsold work.
The entries will be checked for prospectus adherence and quality of frame, mats and if there is any debris present. James talked about the size limitation in the prospectus and the fact that 9 artists had listed frame sizes which were under the minimum requirements. These artists had to be called at entry close. It was noted that we had far fewer questions this year than last. James felt this may be a result of the 330 square inches clarification and that most members are now reading the prospectus.
There was a discussion on the need for the monetary awards to be so high. 1500.00 for Best of Show is top dollar paid for Society shows around the US. Jan said that the amount was raised due to the survey responses from the members to use discretionary funds for awards and prize money. It seems that we are attracting entries from out of state, some of which are from entrants that could be jurors rather than entrants. This is due to the awards being so high. Jan made the point that for these artists to ship their work to and from the show is an expense and we are trying to make this expense less of a burden.
The point was made that many of our members are getting discouraged with entering this exhibit due to the solicitation of outside high-end artists.
Workshop Aguiar:
The Jacob Aguiar workshop is short 3-4 attendees for NPS to break even. We would like to encourage members to fill these slots and NPS is offering scholarships for those who need help with the expense. Currently we have 11 attending out of the 14 we hoped for.
James would like to ask for a volunteer workshop chairperson that could post our workshops on line and keep them current. Karen O’Brien is currently the workshop financial chairperson.
Paint out: Jan Wall:
Jan reported on the Camp Casey workshop and the deadline for renting rooms which is May 15th. The paint out is in conjunction with PAWA and will run from August 21 – 25.
Jan feels that the organization of the paint outs is as a group event is less attended than the impromptu meetings which allows painters to make their own reservations and attend when it is convenient for them. This may be the future for the NPS workshops rather than attempting to organize an entire group of artists.
Member Show OSA Oregon:
James reported on the member show for NPS which will be held at and in conjunction with, Oregon Society of Artists. The show will run August 6th through August 31st. Check the prospectus for artwork drop off times and pick up of unsold work. OSA will take 20% on of the sale of any work during the show. James has been promised by NPS members of ample transportation of artwork during the first week in August. Also, pick-up at the end of the month.
Desmond O”Hagan will be the juror for this show. Member have until May 28th to enter as many as 3 works with a guarantee of at least one being entered in to the show. As many as 20 OSA members may enter the show but will not be eligible for awards.

Desmond O'Hagan is a master pastelist with the Pastel Society
of America, and is a member of the "Master's Circle" of the
International Association of Pastel Societies. He has been a
professional artist for over twenty years and has had numerous
one-man shows throughout the United States. He has also participated
in group shows in Japan, China, and France. O'Hagan has
received several awards for his art through the Pastel Society of
America, IAPS, and the Salmagundi Club in New York City.
He has judged many national shows for pastels and oils and
conducted workshops throughout the United States.
Member Show Evergreen Medical Center:
The NPS Member show for 2018 and 2019 will be held at the Evergreen Medical Offices in Kirkland WA in October and will hang for 3 months each time. The venue will off 4-5 areas within the passages from one area to another. The build also houses the cafeteria and the emergency wing of the hospital which is a short distance from Highway 405. These are high traffic areas within the confines of the center. There are many visitors to the center, some repeat their visits. Some are patients and some are visiting patients. Of course, the cross section of visitors will range widely in economic capability but the current artists are selling some work. Evergreen has invested to a secure locking system which requires ALL work to be hung with D-ring hangers for connecting the wire.
Workshops for Member Show Evergreen:
Claire “Pinky” Ridlon has agreed to open her meeting area for workshops for in conjunction with the member shows held at Evergreeen medical center. Stay tuned for the first workshop information.
Signature Show Scott Milo:
Our Signature show for 2017 will be held at Scott Milo’s gallery in Anacortes, Sept. 1st through 30th. The show will be up for Friday Art Walk and the NPS opening will be Sept. 2nd from 2-4PM. Stay tuned to NWPS.org for entry info!
